Abstract

Total edentulism profoundly impacts both functional and esthetic aspects of the oral and facial systems, diminishing quality of life and social integration. Removable prostheses continue to represent a cornerstone in the rehabilitation of edentulous patients, providing a non-invasive, cost-effective solution to restore mastication, speech, facial support, and esthetic balance. This review explores the principles of functional and esthetic rehabilitation through removable prostheses, highlighting the importance of stability, retention, and anatomical restoration in achieving satisfactory outcomes. Advances in biomaterials, digital design, and fabrication technologies have improved the precision, durability, and natural appearance of modern dentures, enhancing patient satisfaction. Nevertheless, challenges such as progressive bone resorption, prosthesis instability, psychological adaptation, and maintenance requirements remain significant limitations. A patient-centered, individualized approach, integrating functional needs with esthetic expectations, is critical for long-term success. Future perspectives focus on incorporating innovative materials, digital workflows, and bioengineering strategies to further improve prosthetic rehabilitation and meet the growing expectations of an increasingly diverse patient population. Removable prosthodontics thus remains a dynamic field, evolving continuously to offer solutions that restore not only oral function but also personal identity and self-confidence in patients with total edentulism.
