Abstract
This article synthesizes the action of plant active principles from the class of iridoids and flavonoids in the therapy of periodontal disease. The first part presents the effects of plant compounds from the iridoids and flavonoids at the systemic level. In the second part, we refer to their action at the level of the periodontium. Iridoids and flavonoids are a class of compounds widespread in the vegetable kingdom, and in recent years, progress in phytochemical research has identified new structures with remarkable activity. We present a series of clinical studies regarding iridoids and flavonoids in which the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects and inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases enzymes (MMP) are confirmed.
