ABSTRACT

Aim of the study We studied the synthesis and biological activity of new compounds from the benzimidazole class. The aim of this study was to obtain new derivatives of 5-nitro-2-mercaptobenzimidazole due to their multiple possibilities of use in medical practice. Our choice was based on numerous researches mentioned in the specialized literature, which highlight interesting pharmacological properties of compounds from this series and the search for more effective treatments against dental diseases and the most controlled and sustained release of the biologically active principle at the site of the disease. Materials and methods The reagents used in this paper were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich, Merk, Fluka and S.C. Chemical Company SA.FT-IR spectra were recorded at a FT-IR spectrophotometer (ATR) Brucker Tensor-27. Results In this research, we synthesized new compounds with biologically active potential against dependent bacterial forms of the oral cavity and established structure-activity relationships in the benzimidazole class. Conclusions Compound XVII among those synthesized by us proved to be the most promising for potential use in the treatment of bacterial plaque due to its intense antibacterial activity, being selected for the subsequent obtaining of a controlled/sustained release system.
